Greensboro College will honor the immense
achievements of our hometown hero, Olympic gold medalist Joey Cheek, by
establishing a scholarship in his name. His “heart of gold” is being honored
by Greensboro College with a full
scholarship to a worthy student from the Republic of Sudan.

Joey has raised the
world’s awareness of the oppressive environment in the Darfur region and the need
for educational opportunities in the Sudan and similar parts of
the world. The College recognizes Joey for his character, his humanitarian
concerns and his philanthropic leadership in addressing the developmental
needs of youth worldwide.

When college-ready
students from war-torn Kosovo needed assistance, Greensboro College took them in and
covered all their expenses. As a College of the Church since 1838, our sole
mission is to educate young people.
Joey Cheek’s selfless act of giving away his medal honoraria reflects Greensboro College’s long-time emphasis
on character development. His altruism is so remarkable that we want to honor
him and his commitment to helping others. This scholarship will do exactly
that.
Greensboro College will identify a
student from the Sudan (or a neighboring
region) who is capable of doing college work but who is in need of
assistance. Greensboro College will provide a
tuition-free scholarship for all four years of that student’s attendance and
will work to raise all other monies necessary for that student to attend
expense-free (covering books, clothing, housing, transportation, etc.).
This 4-year full tuition scholarship represents an $80,000 commitment from Greensboro College, and our goal to
support this particular student will be to raise an additional $50,000 for
personal and living expenses (room and board, books, clothing, airfare for
three round trips per year, incidentals, etc.).
Funds raised in excess of that will go to a Joey Cheek Scholarship Endowment
Fund to provide additional support for future African students to attend Greensboro College.
The overall goal is to honor and help fulfill Joey Cheek's specific passion
and outreach to suffering children in Darfur. Although the first
step will be to find a pool of qualified students from the Darfur region of the Sudan, that scope will be
extended to the full Republic of Sudan if a suitable
candidate cannot be found. We also do not preclude the possibility of a
Sudanese refugee residing in a neighboring country … or even in the USA.
We are making contact with the African Services Coalition as well as other
relief agencies for possible assistance in identifying qualified candidates.
Joey also is invited to use his contacts to generate referrals.
Greensboro College is privileged to be a
part of doing something good and significant in honor of a young person who
himself is both good and significant!
